How to Plan an Anniversary Party or Vow Renewal

A guide to celebrating milestone anniversaries — party formats, vow renewal etiquette, who hosts, timelines, and ideas for 10th through 50th anniversaries.

Weddings get the industry; anniversaries get a card aisle. Which is backwards, when you think about it — a 25th or 50th anniversary is statistically rarer and arguably harder-won than any wedding. If someone in your family is approaching a milestone year, here’s how to celebrate it at the scale it deserves.

Which anniversaries get a party?

Any of them, but tradition and family gravity concentrate on a few: the 10th (the first big one), the 25th (silver), the 40th (ruby), and the 50th (golden — the summit). The 50th in particular has become the anniversary most often celebrated with a full event, frequently hosted for the couple by their adult children.

That’s the etiquette headline, actually: milestone anniversary parties are usually hosted by family or close friends, not the couple themselves — though couples hosting their own 10th or 25th is completely modern and normal.

Party or vow renewal? (Or both?)

Two distinct events hide under “anniversary celebration”:

The anniversary party — a dinner or cocktail party in the couple’s honor. Toasts, retrospective photos, dancing to their era’s music. Structurally, it’s a milestone birthday party (our guide applies almost verbatim) with two guests of honor.

The vow renewal — a short ceremony where the couple re-exchanges vows, followed by a reception. Renewal etiquette, briefly:

The both option is the crowd favorite: a 15-minute renewal folded into the party, positioned right before dinner.

Ideas that make it theirs

Anniversary parties have an unfair advantage over every other event: decades of material. Use it.

The reason to bother

Fifty years of marriage produces exactly one thing rarer than the milestone itself: a room containing everyone who witnessed it. Anniversary parties assemble that room while it can still be assembled. That’s not an event; that’s a gift — to the couple, and honestly to everyone under 40 in attendance who needed the proof it’s possible.
